What is MLM Marketing

Multi-level marketing (MLM), also known as Network Marketing, is a marketing model that is used by some companies to promote and sell their products. Often this is in addition to an overall marketing strategy and just one part of their sales and money making tactics. Sometimes it can be paralleled to Direct Sales business as well, though there are some integral differences.

The Structure and Model of MLM Opportunities

Basically the business will recruit a sales force and compensate the promoters of their products and services by paying only for actual conversions and sales via a commission. Another aspect of MLM marketing is what is called a downline. Which means that the individual promoter will make residual commissions from any sales that the recruits in their own downline make. Creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation in the form of a pyramid is the crux of the MLM marketing home business and where the big money potential usually lies.

With MLM opportunities and home business the consumer is the main customer and to who the products are marketed directly. The main venues are by personal and business relationships, a lot of face to face and of course word of mouth about the products. For MLM success the key is often the quality of the product itself, its established popularity can play a key role and the sales ability of the marketer and his/her downline.

Those involved in the MLM business are referred to as, associates, independent business owners, dealers, franchise owners, sales consultants, consultants, independent agents, etc… They are just representatives of the company and theri products or services that they sell. This business is all commission based and can be a lucrative independent home business. Often there are bonus structures in place that rewards volumes of sales and the earning potential as well as home business success is totally up to the MLM marketer and his downline.

MLM Companies and Legitimacy

MLM business operate in all 50 states and over 100 countries. One of the most well known and long time established MLM businesses is Amway. Avon is a type of MLM marketing model as well as, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Herbal Life and other bigger companies.

Not all companies that implement this model are good or legitimate, and some of them are rather shady. The MLM model is regulated by the FCC (Federal Trade Commission) and there are rules. Often times it can come very close to what is called a Pyramid Scheme, which primarily pays commissions for recruiting new agents, including sign-up fees to the downline is illegal and should be avoided at all costs. However, many Pyramid Schemes try to present themselves as legitimate MLM businesses and this is why it is crucial for anyone who is trying to build a home business and become an MLM marketer needs to thoroughly investigate the company they are going to represent. A legitimate MLM business model will only pay their representatives for actual sales of their products and services.
