So you think you want to start an online business?  If you are like most people you have been lured by the potential for great wealth but you really don’t understand what it means to create a successful online business.  The fact is there is a lot of money to be made with an internet business but over 95% of the people who set out to make money online never even make their first dollar.  Why is that?  It has to do with expectations and reality crashing into each other and the unwillingness of the new website owner to truly understand what is needed.

Most people who want a business online think that it is really like the lottery.  You put up a website (buy a ticket) and then people send you money (your number is drawn) and you spend the rest of your life in leisure.  The reality is quite different.  No one is going to give you money unless it is in their best interest.  Even the lottery people only give out cash prizes because that makes more people buy more tickets.  You must have something on your site that interests people enough to do some action that results in money to you.

This does not mean you must actually sell a product to each of your visitors.  Many websites are set up just as advertising mediums for other sites which do the selling.  This business model involves developing content on the site and creating buzz about the site with article marketing in order to get people to visit the original web property.  Once they are on the page you offer different advertising choices they can click on to go to other places on the web.  Every time the visitor clicks on one of these ads you get paid.

This model works well but you have two problems you need to address for success.  You need to build the site and you need to develop customer traffic.  Getting visitors is really the basis for all business opportunities online because like in an offline store, if you don’t have any customers you can’t make a sale.

The beauty is you aren’t waiting for someone to pick your number.  You can actually do things to increase the odds of winning at this game.  You just need to do the work.
